About Snuggles:
The Snuggles Project
The Snuggles Project is an organization that promotes giving pets the cozy comfort they need and deserve while waiting for their forever home. The official definition of a Snuggle is "a security blanket for shelter animals." The term "security blanket" is based on the psychological effects it provides to the animals. A Snuggle can be used as a blanket, mat, or bed. The primary purpose of the Snuggle is to provide physical and psychological comfort at a time when the animal
feels the most vulnerable and hopeless.
Our "Snuggles" provide physical and psychological comfort at a time when the animal feels the most vulnerable and hopeless. The Snuggles Project was founded in 1996 because of a heartfelt need to do something for the innocent animals who find themselves in animal shelters/rescued
without a bit of comfort to call their own. Security blankets for shelter rescue animals!
The security blankets are called "Snuggles."
Stitch n Chicks chose this charity because of so many needy pets rescued that are frightened and need comfort. We make the “Snuggles” every year and donate them to a
local “no kill” pet rescue organization,
“Forever Home Pet Rescue” Gloria runs the Long Beach rescue.
Gloria and her workers look forward to our donations yearly and are grateful that
we can provide her rescue pets with some comfort. Every pet in her rescue group
when adopted gets to take home one of our “Snuggles” and makes the
transition of new surroundings less stressful for each animal.
We gather all our donations and prepare them in baskets and add some collars, food,
and a few other pet items. We deliver them as a group to the Pet Rescue with big smiles.
It is one of Stitch n’ Chicks most favorite and heartwarming annual charity giving. Best of all when we go to the adoption outing and look into the cages we see our handmade “Snuggles” in each cage.

Questions?
What kind of yarn can Snuggles be made with? Answer: Ideally, acrylic or cotton is the easiest for shelters to clean. Wool has a tendency to shrink in the hot water washings and can begin to felt in odd ways. Also, wool can maintain odors and grime which gives them a very limited usage life. What we have found is that if you combine wool with another strand of acrylic the end result is much better and more usable. You can also use fabric strips to make Snuggles. These make a strong mat which is useful in the concrete kennels. What are the guidelines for filling a sewn Snuggle?
When filling Snuggles, you must take care that the Snuggles are not easily opened. Use layers of material (such as flannel or terry cloth) for filling. Polyester or cotton batting is not recommended as the batting is easily torn out by a hyperactive animal. Most shelters will not accept Snuggles filled with batting as it is too messy and may cause health problems for the animals if the animal should get at the batting. But we have found a nice way around this: double stitch the hems and stitch over the snuggle with a cross-hatch or other pattern. This will hold the snuggle together and the shelters will accept these without a problem. What sizes are needed?
This depends on whether it is being made for a cat or dog? Yarn is approximate yards and it varies on your tension. The guidelines are:
