What are SnC "Lap-Snuggles?" They are smaller afghan blankets made with One yard of Cotton fabric and one yard of Fleece. They are then edged with yarn in crochet or knit or sewn trim. We use many different edgings. They are long enough to cover the patient's lap and legs and if they are in a wheel chair can still use them as they are shorter than a full size afghan or blanket and will not drag on the floor. They are very soft and warm. We make them for our Shoreline Healthcare facility patients. If you would like one made for a loved one we will gladly make one, just tell us your favorite colors. Cost: $35.00. Contact: HERE

THE SNUGGLES PROJECT

What is a Snuggle?
The official definition of a Snuggle is "a security blanket for shelter animals." The term "security blanket" is based on the psychological effects it provides to the animals. A Snuggle can be used as a blanket, mat, or bed. The primary purpose of the Snuggle is to provide physical and psychological comfort at a time when the animal feels the most vulnerable and hopeless. It could possibly be the last piece of comfort an animal may feel in his life. It is the intent and purpose of the Snuggles Project to make sure that each and every shelter animal has this comfort to help them get through this period in their life.
The great thing about doing snuggles, is they're not that big and you can use up any left over skein or "ugly" or scrap yarn you have. About 1 skein will make a good size kitty Snuggle.
Participants in the Snuggles Project should be aware that a “Snuggle” is an animal bed/mat/blanket which is created with the intention of donating to a shelter to provide comfort and security to a homeless pet (essentially, created for the purpose of the Snuggles Project).

What sizes are needed?
This depends on the shelter you are planning to give Snuggles to. If in doubt, ask the shelter manager what their needs are.
The guideline is:
The guideline is:
- SnC popular size = 18" x 21" [fat 1/4 size]
- 12" x 12" or 14" x 14" for kittens and small dogs
- 24" x 24" for cats and small to medium dogs
- 36" x 36" for medium to large dogs

How many stitches do I need?
Question:
You say "Chain/cast on a length to equal desired width", but how many stitches do I need to make a certain length?
Answer:
The width of the Snuggle [must be at least 12" x x12"] otherwise it is up to you, so it doesn't matter how many stitches you use as long as they are within the additional requirement of multiples indicated in the pattern.
For instance, if you want to make a Snuggle 20 inches wide, you would chain or cast on the number of stitches to achieve that width. For instance, when you crochet just measure the chain length for the desired width. For knitting, typically the number of stitches times 1.5 gives you your desired width.
Question:
Does the Snuggle have to be crocheted?
Answer:
NO. You can knit, quilt, sew or combine fabric, fleece and crochet or knit the edgings.
Question:
What is a "Lap-ghan" or "Lap Snuggle"?
Answer:
It is a smaller size afghan that fits on a lap and hangs to the patient's ankles. SnC calls their's "Lap-Snuggles" when we use fleece and fabric and crochet or knit the edgings. Our usual size is 1 yard of fabric.
Example of SnC "Lap-Snuggle" is pictured in the LEFT column.

What are the guidelines for filling a crochet or sewn Snuggle?
Example of Snuggles are pictured to the When filling crochet or knit Snuggles, you must take care that the Snuggles cannot be easily opened. Use layers of material (such as flannel or terry cloth) for filling. Polyester or cotton batting is not recommended as the batting is easily torn out by a hyperactive animals. Most shelters will not accept Snuggles filled with batting as it is too messy and may cause health problems for the animals if the animal should get at the batting.
If you are making a fabric sewn Snuggle use a very light weight 1/2" batting and be sure to stitch like a quilt [3] times across and at least two rows lengthwise to hold it in place.
But, we have found a nice way around this: double stitch the hems and stitch over the Snuggle with a cross-hatch or other pattern. This will hold the snuggle together and the shelters will accept these without a problem. [Since we donate to a facility that has foster homes rather than cages for its pets, we do not usually have problems with torn Snuggles]
Examples of our Snuggles are shown in the pictures in the LEFT column.

Where do I find those clips used in the Cat Hammock?
The clips (called Carbiner clips) used in the Cat Hammock pattern in the January 2006 newsletter can be found at some craft supply or home improvement stores. Look for the nylon plastic ones instead of the aluminum or stainless steel ones. If you can't find those clips, any nylon snap hook should work. We would recommend using only the nylon plastic clips as they will wash better than the metal ones.
|
Hints:
- Be sure that you consider that dogs and cats have nails that catch in stitches and also need warmth so if you stitch "loose" then you may want to use 2 strands when stitching it.
- Shop at the "Yarn Barn" for really low price yarn or use Joann's/Hobby Lobby/Michael's coupons
- Mostly you can just get yarn from Crochetoholic Debb from our Charity Donations.

Basketweave Madness Snuggle
A NO-SEW Blanket
Designed by Rae French
This is a no-sew polar fleece project. This pattern uses a simple checkerboard-style basketweave but by altering the weave you can create your own unique masterpiece. This is a great project for kids.
Material and Tools:
1/2 yd Polar fleece
Scissors or rotary cutter
Mat
3 Foot metal Yardstick
Material and Tools:
1/2 yd Polar fleece
Scissors or rotary cutter
Mat
3 Foot metal Yardstick
Project Tip: Cut both layers of fleece at same time.
Instructions:
Layer pieces of fleece. Cut into 1" strips across.
Arrange strips next to each other. Place yardstick across end of strips to hold in place. Fold every other (even numbered) strip back.
Lay alternating strip across, fold even numbered strips back.
Continue in this fashion until all strips are laid in a basketweave.
Finishing:
There are many different ways to finish this to secure the strips in place. You may want to add grommets to each strip end to hold the layers together. You may want to use yarn to tack strip layers together (shown in model). You may want to use a sewing machine to stitch the layers together. You may want to hand sew the layers together. I'm sure that you can think of more ways to keep the layers together. Be creative and enjoy the project.
